How often should I mow my lawn?
Most Wisconsin lawns do best with a cut every 7 to 10 days during the growing season — more often after a wet spring, less when things dry out in August. Try not to take off more than about a third of the blade length in one pass.
Why does my lawn have brown or dry patches?
Usually uneven watering, compacted soil, or a spot catching extra heat off a driveway or wall. Grubs and heavy foot traffic can do it too. Fixing the water pattern and aerating solves most of it.
When's the best time to aerate?
Early fall, once temperatures cool but before the ground freezes, is usually the best window in this part of Wisconsin. Spring works too if fall gets missed.
How do I keep my lawn looking good through the winter?
Give it a final mow a bit shorter than usual before the snow flies, clear off leaves and debris, and stay off the grass once it's frozen or under snow — foot traffic on dormant grass can damage it.
